CITY ATELIER

Nobody lives or works in a vacuum. The same is true of Vooruit. As a meeting place and a house for art, culture and reflection, we are nestled in the heart of an urban context that shouldn't and couldn't be ignored. Whether it's on the level of the street, the locality, the city or society as a whole, everywhere we look we encounter opportunities to enter into dialogue with one another and collectively tackle the issues and pitfalls of the day.

This is the point of departure for the artists participating in Vooruit's Stadsatelier (‘City Atelier’): an artistic research studio focusing on art and society, with the city itself as the artists' working space. The artists, collectives and organisations connected to the Stadsatelier work together to build bridges: between citizen and artist, between Ghent residents, the city and its public spaces, between urban planning and the day-to-day lives of those whose lives are affected by this planning. Although the initiative is taken by the artists, citizens are actively engaged.

  • Guiding principles of the STADSATELIER:
  • the artist enters into dialogue with citizens and/or the community
  • the work is rooted in their artistic practice
  • the work is bound to a specific context and investigates societal issues (social, ecological, political, etc.)
  • human interaction, participation and critical reflection are of central importance
  • the ultimate form may vary: performance, publication, installation, expo, video, magazine, intervention, talk, etc.

In the Stadsatelier we work together with a diverse range of artists, researchers, collectives and organisations.

The cities everyone wants to live in should be clean and safe, possess efficient public services, be supported by a dynamic economy, provide cultural stimulation, and also do their best to heal society's divisions of race, class, and ethnicity. These are not the cities we live in.

Richard Sennett - The Open City

CITY RESIDENTS

The CITY ATELIER is populated by its own host of residencies. Each of the artists involved make it their purpose to work in and with the urban context of Ghent, often through participative practices. Seperate but equal to their artistic ambitions lies their focus on the social and political impact of artistic work.

STADSTEKENAARS

We werken o.a. samen met Victoria Deluxe, Lucas De Man / Stichting Nieuwe HeldenBOUGIE, Manoeuvre en Kloppend Hert/Jong Gewei
