In her third solo performance, Vooruit performing-arts resident Sachli Gholamalizad looks to the work of pioneering Iranian artists Googoosh and Forough Farrokhzad as a point of departure for her captivating exploration of what it means to be a woman today. How can we shake off the judgements of the outside world and return to the core of who we are?
Googoosh and Forough are creating – the former through pop music and acting, the latter through poetry – a new reality for generations of men and women both in and outside of Iran. Their words conjure forbidden worlds and invite women to feel comfortable in their bodies again. It is this legacy that Sachli interweaves with contemporary feminist voices to create a thoughtful and layered musical performance.
After diving into her family history in ‘A reason to talk’ and ‘(Not) my paradise’ – performed last year at Vooruit during BLAUWDRUK – Gholamalizad is now taking a well-considered step towards the future. Sebastiaan Van den Branden of Amatorski supplies the soundtrack.
