Is the mythical unicorn the result of a misunderstanding? Is the creature no more than a misinterpretation of an Indian drawing depicting an ox with a single horn, the second horn simply being obscured by the first?
In any case, all manner of meanings have come to be associated with the unicorn over the centuries: from a pagan creature to a symbol of the pope, and from a magical guardian of the innocence of young girls to a contemporary pop culture icon. These creatures of unknown provenance have been used and abused by man, without any say in the matter. The Italian Chiara Bersani seeks to make amends of this. She wants to give them a story, a choice and, most of all, love.
In her oeuvre Bersani combines contemporary dance and performance, working together with Alessandro Sciarroni and Jérôme Bel. She suffers from a mild form of brittle bone disease and in her work she goes in search of the political significance that a body can assume. “You are not the one who interprets me, I will show you the path to comprehend me,” says Bersani. “I determine the image that the world will have of me and my body”.
