She has danced in works by greats such as Wim Vandekeybus, Jan Fabre and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, but now she’s forging her own path with her theatre company Voetvolk. In the internationally acclaimed triptych ‘It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend’, ‘AH/HA’, and ‘We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay’, Lisbeth Gruwez focused on the ecstatic body, but this time she’s moving in a radical new direction.
‘The Sea Within’ is a magnetic show in which Gruwez gives chaos free reign. Her work remains just as sharp and intense as before, but now, rather than zooming in on the individual, the choreographer – who, for the first time, will not be treading the boards herself – has a group of 11 dancers become absorbed in a panoramic, breathing landscape. Together they arrive at a new, contemporary ritual in which the ‘we’ embraces the ‘I’.
The music is supplied by Gruwez’s regular companion Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, with support from top musicians Elko Blijweert and Bjorn Eriksson. Minimalistic synths and a captivating flow of frequencies drive their electronic sound design to the very core of the senses.
