An ode in dance to an extraordinary woman

This intriguing solo by Jan Martens is a dance portrait of the Polish Elisabeth Chojnacka (1939-2017), an exceptionally talented and passionate musician who helped to launch a revival of harpsichord music. ‘Elisabeth gets her way’ pays homage to this remarkable woman.

The solo performance is supported by documentary audio fragments and a soundtrack that ranges widely, from Nyman to Montague and Ligeti. Jan Martens is an extraordinary dancer who brings together different styles of movement. His work, like Chojnacka’s, is informed by several centuries of music history, effortlessly slaloming between different registers and genres.

Elisabeth Chojnacka first came to Martens’ attention during the creation process of 'any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones', which is to be performed as part of the Opera Ballet programme in December. Her sense of rhythm and willingness to colour outside the lines are what inspired Martens to capture her portrait in dance. As the 'muse' of many avant-garde composers, she also stoked Martens’ thinking regarding the relationship between creator and performer.

“Jan Martens legt in zijn solo ‘Elisabeth gets her way’ op zo’n ingenieuze en precieze manier de vinger op de vernieuwende betekenis van Elisabeth Chojnacka dat je vol bewondering achterblijft.”
