Creating new mourning rituals, Greek style

‘Lamenta’ is a worthy continuation in the artistic odyssey of choreographers Koen Augustijnen and Rosalba Torres Guerrero. They first garnered attention with the highly successful ‘Badke’ from 2013, which was also presented at Voo?uit. In their latest joint creation, Augustijnen and Torres Guerrero continue down their shared artistic path.

Nine contemporary Greek dancers share the stage in ‘Lamenta’. Together, they explore how the energetic qualities – both earthly and transcendental – of Greek music and dance can unfold in a contemporary creation. Their aim is to create a new ritual for casting off the painful feelings that accompany separation and loss. ‘Lamenta’ zooms in on the different emotions we experience when we mourn.

The main source of inspiration for ‘Lamenta’ are the ‘miroloi’ of Epirus in Northern Greece. Miroloi are Greek laments sung not only at funerals but also when someone leaves the family to marry or emigrate. The live recordings of these songs form the emotional backbone of the performance.
