A multitemporal choreography in a decolonial sense

‘Fictions of the Flesh’ is a site-specific dance solo, adapted to the architecture and layout of the Woodrow Wilson Square in Ghent. The choreography draws from the physical archive of Mariama Fatou Kally Slåttøy, a trained jazz dancer. More inspiration was found in speculative future fictions in literature and film. In ‘Fictions of the Flesh’, Slåttøy brings a ‘new’ and more-than-human corporeality to life. The shape and texture of her costume enhances, reinforces, ables and unables some of the movements.

The choice for jazz dance isn’t coincidental. It has its origins in various African styles of dancing - with an emphasis on polyrhythm and improvisation - which were brought to the Americas during the colonial period. Several of these dances came to deal with the hardships of the slaves in the colonies, which is in grim contrast to the use of commercial jazz dance today.

Norwegian artists Ingri Fiksdal, Frederik Floen and Slåttøy were inspired by Cameroonian philosopher Achille Mbembe and his idea of decolonization. He sees this as a planetary project that requires a radical openness to the world, in order to pluralize perspectives rather than merely form new hegemonies. ‘Fictions of the Flesh’ may at best help to expand this discourse, particularly within the field of choreography and dance.
