Jozef Van Wissem
The world of lute player and minimalist composer Jozef Van Wissem has its own tempo and language. With his custom-built, black baroque lute, the Dutchman creates a unique universe of dark and timeless intensity. After a number of remarkable records and collaborations – see his albums with director Jim Jarmusch! – Van Wissem returns to Vooruit with a collection of new work during an exclusive livestream.
Jozef Van Wissem was one of last year’s guests at VIDEODROOM, providing a new soundtrack for the silent film ‘The Dying Swan’. In early 2020 he released ‘Ex Mortis’ with the Ghent-based label Consouling Sounds. For his new compositions Van Wissem took inspiration from a book written by nuns in 1290, in which they write about God in an almost erotic manner. Van Wissem is supported on ‘Ex Mortis’ by several (ex-)members of the legendary band Swans. At Vooruit he will present an intimate solo set.
Jonas Meersmans conjures instrumental landscapes with his acoustic guitar. In 2018, a year after his debut, follow-up record ‘Monnift II’ was released, on which his solitary fingerpicking is accompanied by brass and string instruments. Jonas has appeared on Klara, written music for Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s acclaimed debut film ‘Broeders’, and performed together with LYENN, Ryley Walker and Cian Nugent, among others. In 2020 he featured on a compilation album from the American label Tompkins Square.
