In the language of the Native American Hopi tribe, ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ means ‘life out of balance’. The eponymous 1982 film with music by Philip Glass is the third film in our VIDEODROOM programme – after ‘Solaris’ and ‘The Shining’ – that can claim an uncanny relevance to our current times. This hypnotic documentary from director Godfrey Reggio will be shown in its entirety, accompanied by a specially-composed live score by Chantal Acda (Isbells, Marble Sounds) and Vooruit resident Eric Thielemans.
“When Chantal and I, after so many years, rewatched ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ during the lockdown’, Thielemans reveals, ‘we were overwhelmed by the combination of the cinematographic and musical beauty, as well as its sense of urgency, the deeper allusions to climate change and the relevance to the corona crisis.” For VIDEODROOM, Acda and Thielemans will present their musical interpretation, a means of ritually connecting with the original score.
