In Uganda’s smallest villages and largest shantytowns a movement of veejay storytellers is emerging. In improvised cinemas they translate and interpret Hollywood blockbusters live. When the Swedish artist Markus Öhrn heard about this phenomenon he came up with a brilliant idea: what if the storytellers would take on films by the cineaste Ingmar Bergman? Öhrn filmed the veejays giving their interpretation of Bergman’s ‘Persona’ from 1966.
With ‘Bergman in Uganda’ Markus Öhrn shows – not without irony – how Ugandan viewers see us European viewers. In this way, the veejay’s interpretation of Bergman’s characteristically complex reflections on European culture results in a confusing and confronting reversal. ‘Bergman in Uganda’ invites you to reflect on your own perspective.
“What’s considered art, is defined by a white Eurocentric perspective.”
