Can a theatre space be transformed into a book?

Structures in words, ephemeral spaces made of cardboard and imagined scenographies – yet there was no time to build them. Fragile spaces made of paper that transform the theatre into a gigantic book. Scenographer Jozef Wouters and dramaturge Jeroen Peeters were going to make a performance around this idea when the coronavirus struck, the event was cancelled and suddenly they had too much time on their hands during those strange weeks of lockdown.

'Moments Before the Wind' has therefore become a book, a collection of notes on scenography that offer an insight into the poetics and artistic practice of Jozef Wouters and Decoratelier. Reflections on space, scenography, making art and institutional critique invite the reader to think along or to raise questions, to think out loud and to invent their own space.

On the occasion of the book presentation, Decoratelier will occupy the auditorium for a few days in order to activate the publication on stage. The half-finished decors and ideas that resisted being bound will finally be tested in the theatre.

Jozef Wouters is a scenographer and theatre maker based in Brussels, who develops work in collaboration with his Decoratelier. Decoratelier is also a workplace for set designers and artists, and provides room for cross-disciplinary ventures and spatial experiment.

Jeroen Peeters is currently living and working in Brussels, as a writer, dramaturg and performer. Recurring themes in Peeters' writings are the claim that dance is not a pictorial medium, approaching the performing arts as a site for social experiments and embodied knowledge.

Varamo Press embraces the unexpected and values the arbitrary circumstances in which writing comes into being. Snatching, wording, printing, it gives a paper form to various kinds of literature that have a fleeting life elsewhere.

“Zijn vermogen om ruimtes te transformeren, en daarmee de mensen die ze bevolken, is uitzonderlijk.”

Charlotte De Somviele, De Standaard
