Gilles Vandecaveye-Pinoy, Kobe Boon and Simon Raman – alias Steiger – are three musicians who aren’t intimidated by genres or the unfamiliar. Imagine jazz, avant-garde and experimental electronica playing tag on a desolate landscape. This year the experimental piano trio are releasing a new EP and in 2021 they’re launching a new LP out into the world. For the recording sessions the group will be teaming up with producer/engineer Peter Desmedt (Beraadgeslagen, De Beren Gieren, John Ghost).
In recent years Steiger has been a musician-in-residence at Vooruit, deSingel and Flagey. The result of these residencies will be distilled into an EP – a collaboration with electronica musician Joe Talia – and an LP. The context in which they create their music has a big influence on the way in which the group improvises, composes and plays together. This ever-changing context is a crucial aspect of Steiger’s process.
Pak Yan Lau plays ‘Bakunawa’
‘Bakunawa’ is a continuation of Lau’s solo project ‘Book of Toy’, which captured her fascination for the natural harmonics of toy pianos and clock chimes. Now, taking it to another level, driven by the curiosity and possibility to write for an ensemble, this piece explores a combination of this unconventional instrumentation (clock chimes, toy pianos, metal tubes, harp) and the delicate use of electronics.
In contrast to ‘Book of Toy’, where the pieces were all miniatures, the desire has grown to work more on a long form piece, where the composition can evolve in its own time. Inspired by Asian ritual music, minimal music (Philip Glass, Eliane Radigue) and ambient music, she aims to create her own world of sound (a personal ritual), where one is invited to get lost and become immersed.
“Jazzy eigenzinnigheid (★★★★★)”
