RUISKAMER #2: Ellen Arkbro / Tsubasa Hori & Heleen Van Haegenborgh
Wed 18.1119:15 - 23:00MIRY Concertzaal (Biezekapelstraat 9, 9000 Gent)
A handful of chords: that’s all the Swedish composer and sound artist Ellen Arkbro needed to make her latest LP, ‘Chords’, a subtly lingering minimal drone masterpiece. “Listening to Arkbro’s work means listening to chords and nothing else. If that sounds dull, or strict, or technical, then you haven’t heard these chords”, wrote Pitchfork.
Arkbro works predominantly with slow-moving, harmonic intervals. In her work, which ranges from live shows to installations and compositions for ensembles, she reconciles traditional acoustic instruments with electronic algorithms. For this edition of RUISKAMER she will be playing an organ solo.
Tsubasa Hori & Heleen Van Haegenborgh
Piano and taiko drums are inherently linked to Western classical music and Japanese traditional music, respectively. Based on the complement of these instruments, Tsubasa Hori and Heleen Van Haegenborgh improvise a world in which time and space are of secondary importance. Expect unexpected colours and subtly placed sounds in combination with rhythmic gongs, inside piano, echo, rhythm, koto and piano strings.
Tsubasa Hori has toured the globe with the likes of Japanese drum group Kodō and is active in the worlds of art, theatre and dance. Heleen Van Haegenborgh is a contemporary composer and pianist.
“The music might be simple, but underneath the surface, lies not just mountains of air, but oceans full of magisterial depth.”
