The Palestinian city of Hebron, under Israeli control, is divided into zones. The central street of the H2 zone is Shuhada Street, the city’s main artery and its most important market. But today it’s more of a ghost street that – according to the Israeli army – has been ‘sterilised’. That is, removed of Palestinian residents ‘for security reasons’.
Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine, a duo who make both music and theatre under the name Winter Family, travelled to Hebron. There they visited an Israeli friend of their youth who married an ultra-Zionist extremist leader. Ruth and Xavier interviewed the family and their Palestinian neighbours who face the Israeli occupation on a daily basis. They also spoke to political leaders, soldiers, international observers and activists. They all told of their particular Shuhada Street, their fears, hopes and despairs. These witnesses’ accounts form the basis for the production ‘H2 Hebron’.
Ruth plays a tour guide in an exact replica of the H2 zone, a gigantic plastic version of the original. To experience it is to understand for yourself the emotional exhaustion that is part and parcel of this untenable situation.
