What are the effects of Covid-19 and Black Lives Matter?

For our first edition of 'In de soep' live we invite guest speakers Malik Fye and Jenebah Kamara to share their insights and expertise as young people leading the way in their communities through their practices as activists and artists. Together, we reflect on the effects of COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement and what we are learning from these historic moments.

Malik Fye is a 20 year old artist, who works in graphic design, illustrations and theater, as well as other artistic disciplines. Of all these Theater has a special place in their heart. They are a proud member of the Ghent theater program Jong Gewei, an organisation in residence in Vooruit, and are also enrolled in the bachelor Drama at KASK. They have a keen interest in themes such as gender, diversity, identity.

Jenebah Kamara is a 23 year old social work student who also works at Wel Jong Niet Hetero as a project employee. Since 2019 she has been working on a project called Jabari. Jabari is a safe(r) space for queer people of color. Every day she's working on themes like anti-racism, queerness and intersectionality. She is also interested in art, culture and literature.

About In de soep

'In de soep' is a reflection program where every two weeks we go into conversation with an artist and a specialist around the issues that are keeping us up at night. We want to take the time to engage these issues on both a macro and a micro level, to get both an international perspective for inspiration and a specific, local perspective to make it concrete. For this reason every edition of In de soep will feature an online session and a live session.

The live sessions take place every second Thursday at 19h30 in Vooruit in the Foyer Theater Zaal. The live sessions will be conducted, predominantly, in Dutch and hosted by Ghent based sociologist and hip-hop artist Fatih De Vos. Attendance is free, however, registration is obliged.
