Memorable marathon performance by top British performance collective

"Theatre pioneers" - BBC Arts News

Kings and queens, dressed in red capes and cardboard crowns, improvise six hours long (!) in a memorable marathon performance. ‘And on the Thousandth Night ...’ is based on the ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ stories but just as much on the group’s personal memories. The show explores the relationship between audience, storytellers, narrative, emotions, style and genre. Hysteria, absurd vulgarity and surprising tenderness combine to result in a constantly mutating story that encapsulates all the stories of the world.

The British collective Forced Entertainment – a group of six artists who have been performing together since 1984 – seeks to question, break and liberate theatre. In this production they wilfully surrender themselves to the wonderful world of improvisation. The performers on stage compete with, interrupt and push each other, hijacking each other’s narratives and integrating them into their own. A strong example of storytelling and storymaking that moves between folklore, pub banter and philosophical fable.

“There are plays that stay with you over the years and then there’s Forced Entertainment" - The Guardian

“Emotional states. Subverted expectations. If these aren’t the very stuff of artistic innovation, what is?” - The Scotsman
