Mutated pop, cracked house, hyperactive footwork and dark grime: Andy Stott is at home in all ports. His completely unique sound – deep, complex and just plain gorgeous – makes Stott one of the most exciting electronic artists out there. Last November, three years after his highly acclaimed LP ‘Too Many Voices’, the Brit released the EP ‘It Should Be Us’ into the wild. “A continuation of one of the most impressive artistic developments we've had in recent electronic music”, Resident Advisor gushed.
With his latest EP, the brain behind gems like ‘Luxury Problems’ and ‘Faith in Strangers’ – the latter of which featured his former piano teacher Alison Skidmore as guest vocalist – heads into gloomy territory. With zombie beats, slow-mo techno and disorientating beats, he sonifies ‘a caffeine high gone dangerously wrong’ (Pitchfork’s words). This bodes well for Stott’s new, upcoming album. In the meantime, ‘Faith in Strangers’ has justly made it to Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 2010s.
In recent years Stott has performed at countless festivals – SXSW, Unsound, Mutek, to name a handful. For his live sets, he leaves his laptop at home, bringing a largely hardware-based setup. The result is a mix of dancefloor material and atmospheric narratives. Don’t allow yourself to miss his Vooruit show.
