He started out as a wedding singer in his homeland of Syria. Now he’s a dance music icon across the world. The story of Omar Souleyman is remarkable to say the least. Following the LP ‘Wenu Wenu’ (produced by Four Tet, no less) and two acclaimed follow-ups – ‘Bahdeni Nami’ and ‘To Syria, With Love’ – Souleyman is back with ‘Shlon’. The Quietus reckons it’s “his most cohesive record to date.” NME says it best: “Pure, unbridled shoulder-shaking joy”.
Would you believe it? The prolific Syrian artist has more than 500 albums under his belt! Souleyman is opening a new can of techno-dabke for his fourth studio-produced album, ‘Shlon’ out on Diplo’s Mad Decent label / Because music. On six extremely danceable gems the ‘unparalleled demagogue’ (Humo’s words) sings of love and romance. Accompanied by keyboardist Hasan Alo and saz-player Azid Salih, Souleyman combines high-speed Kurdish and Arabic dabke with baladi and electronica.
“Passionate flurries of clapping and dancing and singing along” observed online magazine Bristol In Stereo recently, speaking of Souleyman’s live shows. We’re going to call it now: best party of 2020.

A techno convoy thundering through the desert to the sound of pumping bass: that’s how Brussels whiz kid Cheb Runner describes his music. The young – or ‘cheb’ in Arabic – producer throws disco, raï, Arabic polyrhythms and even some good ol’ deep house in the blender. With self-recorded samples of traditional instruments, he takes you on a trip through time and space, ‘turning traditional music into dancefloor hits’!

“It's so fast that the only appropriate way to engage with it is to wriggle your limbs. Melodies are both abrasive and ebullient, chattering endlessly like raucous birdsong.”
