A moment to reflect on colonial thought patterns

The image most Dutch and Belgian children and adults have of the traditional figure Sinterklaas is that of an old white man with a long beard… and a white person in blackface. What if an African woman were to portray a similar character? Meet Queen Nikkolah aka performer Laura Nsengiyumva, playing with the boundaries of race and gender.

In December she will visit different places in Ghent. Queen Nikkolah will give candy to the children and take the time for a picture. A pleasant encounter for the youngest and for adults a moment to reflect on colonial thought patterns that are still present in European traditions.

‘Queen Nikkolah’ invites us to perceive our heritage as something adaptable. With this performance Nsengiyumva presents a changeable future with equal opportunities and chances.
