Een allegorisch misdaadspel

One night in April 2012, Ihsane Jarfi meets four young men on the corner of a street in front of a gay club in Liège. Two weeks later he is found dead on the edge of a forest. He was tortured and killed with violence. Now the murder is reconstructed for the first time on stage.

In the first part of the series Histoire (s) du théâtre, author and director Milo Rau approaches this tragedy as an allegorical crime performance. What intrigues? Which intentions or coincidences lead to murder? What role does the audience play and what blame can be attributed to the collective? Can a crime be reconstructed at all?

According to Rau, from the outset, theatre has been an incantation of the dead, a ritual experience of primitive crimes and collective traumas. He follows the trail of this terrible crime, and explores fatal events and emotions of the tragic experience such as loss, sadness, lie, truth, disaster, fear, cruelty and terror.

Together with four actors Sara De Bosschere, Sébastien Foucault, Johan Leysen and Tom Adjibi, as well as the storage man Fabian Leenders and the dog-sitter Suzy Cocco, Rau delves into the core of the trauma. Six actors and amateurs contemplate the glamour and abysses of life. How do you represent violence and traumatic events on stage? It is at the same time a search for the core of the fundamentally tragic 'condition humaine' and a celebration of the power of theater. A manifesto for a democratic ‘theatre of the real’ emerges.

#jury19

"Theatraal meesterwerk. Huiveringwekkend goed. Als deze eerste Histoire(s) du Théâtre een voorbode is voor wat volgt, zal NTGent nog veel theatergeschiedenis schrijven."
