Six performers put the 1968 screenplay by Johnny Speight “If there weren’t any blacks you’d have to invent them” on stage. By staging this seemingly outdated movie, they question an important paradox today: the conscious complicity of the members of society to systemic violence which is openly ignored and displaced, and which creates a lingering subconscious feeling of guilt at an individual level. The performance plays with the paradox between the acknowledgement of the injustice of power structures and the fact that one uses those same power structures to consolidate its own personal position.

"If There Weren’t Any Blacks You’d Have to Invent Them is het juiste stuk op het juiste moment, intelligent geënsceneerd en overtuigend vertolkt. Laat deze voorstelling nog op vele plekken spelen. Omdat onze patronen des te gevaarlijker worden als ze blind blijven. En omdat deze absurde creatie ze zichtbaar maakt."

Aurelie Di Marino graduated from KULeuven in 2009 as a literary theorist and in 2013 as a theatre director from RITCS School of Arts. In the past she worked with De Warme Winkel, Milo Rau, Manu Riche, among others. From 2014 until today Aurelie works together with K.A.K. (Koekelbergse Alliantie van Knutselaars) to create artistic occupations of empty spaces, public spaces and semi-public spaces in the city. Comparable to an explorer, Aurelie does her critical and wondering research, in other continents or hyperlocal in the city of Brussels, where she lives and works. Digging for stories in the world, often combined with deep research, Aurelie chases her objective: “to contaminate the world, again, with the new myths we create.
