Nathalie and Doris Bokongo Nkumu, the two dancers who make up Les Mybalés, are linked by a common history and the profound connection that can only be felt by twin sisters. Their relationship plays such a prominent part in their lives, and as artists. Their bond is their greatest strength.
Of Congolese origin, they received traditional names from their tribe that signify their arrival in the world as a dual spirit (Mboyo -Boketshu region of Ecuador, Maboso Magongo Province Orientale). They are a great source of joy and a true blessing to their family; each time the family is reunited is a cause for celebration. Across cultures, the presence of twins carries with it a complex web of myth and belief. To some ethnicities in Africa it can symbolize great misfortune while in parts of Asia it is considered a sign of protection. With their first show Illusion Les Mybalés explore these representations and their incredible variance from one culture to another. They question the notion of twins: their feelings, their way of life and the way in which their identity is constructed. The result is a profound exploration designed to understand and compare the different relationships between twins, enhanced by the emotions and feelings that bind them inextricably to each other.
Les Mybalés transcend the house, afro and hip hop genres. These genres inspire them to create a language of movement specifically attenuated to their individual bodies, and from this they create a natural poetic flow which evokes a depth of feeling. The emotions that run through them nourish their dance and can create moments of power so intense that its expression may seem almost violent. Through such an honest corporeal declaration, they allow us to travel through their universe, drink in their history, and find ourselves in a world with playful little girls and divine creatures. Their aesthetic is singularly characterized by elegance and grace.
Les Mybalés start their dancing career in 2010 in Brussels. The twin sisters were guided by dancers in the Belgian hip hop environment such as choreographers of The Cage Group and dancer Zach Swagga. In search of experience, they take part in dance battles, such as the Juste Debout in Amsterdam and Paris. In 2012 Nathalie and Doris create their own solo. They turn to the non-profit organisation Lezarts Urbains for help, which invites them the European project 7Steps.
During their first performance Illusion at Lezarts Urban Festival 2014, they immerse the audience in the world of two sisters: mutual connection, exchanges and transmitting energy and emotions between each other. This show attracted interest and has appeared at several festivals in Europe from 2014-2017, such as Festivals and Kalypso Karavel France, B.Supreme Festival in London, Spin Off Festival in Amsterdam, Urban Lezarts Festival and Festival XS in Brussels. Because of this piece, Les Mybalés were asked to collaborate with musician Rodolphe Costeren, dancer Ben Furi and choreographer Junior Mthombeni and Belgian rapper Badi.
In 2017, they decided to start a new creation for the Afropolitan Festival in Bozar.
