All the familiar spots at Vooruit, and some less familiar, will be taken over by the most adventurous hip hop and all its offshoots. “lll beats, tight rhymes, fly samples and boundless charisma on the mic”, wrote AP News about the new LP from New York’s underground hip-hop talent Homeboy Sandman. On the funky ‘Dusty’ he tackles the daily drudgery and mental sludgery of our society. And he does so in 15 ass-kicking tracks that will put your (ex-)favourite rapper to shame. For all the OUT THE FRAME veterans who’re fans of Quelle Chris, Open Mike Eagle and legends like Kool Herc and Rakim.
Tristan is the alter ego of 22-year-old vocalist, songwriter and producer Isolde Van den Bulcke. On her two EPs ‘Illusje’ (2018) and ‘Delidomia’ (2019) she switches it up between jazz, breakbeats, electronica and pop. Her formidable voice is the power that binds. De Morgen has described Tristan as “a dash of Hiatus Kaiyote, a wisp of Kate Bush, an ounce of Bat For Lashes on a bed of kraut-, post- and jazz-rock.” Her live shows (with full band) – such as at We Are Open, Ghent Jazz and the AB Club – have received reliably glowing reviews. And the cherry on the cake: over the past year she played support for Tamino three times, for his sold-out shows at the AB.
“A total blast”: the only three words Pitchfork needed to sum up NYC rap phenomenon Cakes Da Killa. We’ll see them and raise them with “LGBTQ+ posterchild” and “witty as hell”. “Pockets stay on swole, peep the motherfucking cash flow / niggas pay my loans just to finger fuck my asshole”: Cakes doesn’t mince his words. His mix of Detroit techno, 90s R&B and brag-rap also drew the attention of the likes of Peaches, LSDXOXO and Honey Dijon, who he’s also collabed with. After the acclaimed albums ‘The Eulogy’ (7.5 on Pitchfork) and ‘Hedonism’ – “breathless hardcore rapping”, panted SPIN magazine – Cakes is returning this summer with a third record. Camae Aywea AKA Moor Mother is conquering the planet with her afrofuturistic techno-gospel, including at a memorable performance at last year’s VIDEODROOM. In late 2019 she released ‘Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes’, with guest contributions from rap icon Reef the Lost Cause and Saul Williams. On this album she combines galling raps about post-colonialism and the black revolution with spirituals, all dowsed in noise and dark hardcore drums. “Raging protest poetry” (The Guardian), “a brutal and unsparing listen” (The Quietus), “the sound of heads hitting concrete” (Pitchfork). After a cancelled appearance at OUT THE FRAME 2018, this here’s your second chance to witness the glory of Moor Mother live.
At the last edition of OUT THE FRAME virtuoso drummer Lander Gyselinck (of STUFF. and BeraadGeslagen, among other projects) collaborated with rap talent Quelle Chris, resulting in an unforgettable show in our Theaterzaal. This time Gyselinck is bringing another friend to the party: Michael J. Love. Love is an interdisciplinary tap dancer who uses performance to explore topics relating to the black identity. This exclusive dance-and-drums show is the result of their residency at Vooruit … and OUT THE FRAME is your one-time-only opportunity to see it!
The young talent from Antwerp Miss Angel started out acapella and wrote her first songs herself, drawing from UK grime and old-school hip hop in a big way. In 2018 she hit the studio with a number of renowned beatmakers, resulting in three hot tracks: ‘Ghetto Supahstar’, ‘Money Making Mami’ and ‘All of the Schmoke’. Following collaborations with Blu Samu and Martha Da’Ro – who performed at OUT THE FRAME in 2018 and 2019, respectively – as well as KRANKk and Zwangere Guy, last summer Miss Angel single-handedly conquered the stages of Rock Werchter, Couleur Café, Dour, Fire is Gold and Pukkelpop. And now she’s coming for OUT THE FRAME.
100% bad as fuck. Kenyan rapper MC Yallah has just released her debut album ‘Kubali’ on Hakuna Kulala, the fine sub-label of Nyege Nyege focusing on East African and Congolese underground electronica. Together with producer Debmaster, MC Yallah has delivered an explosive album crackling with verbal fireworks. Highlights include the grimy swagger of ‘Sifa Leero (Gangsta Edition)’, the militant ‘TT145’ and the ragga slam ‘Kubali’. “MC Yallah looks set to follow other East African artists like Otim Alpha, MCZO & Duke and Kampire onto the international stage”, Resident Advisor predicts.
2019 was a break-out year for Lord Apex, the legend of London’s superterranean underground. When he released ‘Smoke Session Vol. 2’ on Trapdoor Records he stood out from the crowd with his laidback raps and foggy beats. BBC 1Xtra and Boiler Room have already declared their fandom. With the new EP ‘Darkskies’, his first headliner show and support gigs for hip-hop veteran Yasiin ‘Mos Def’ Bey, Lord Apex and his Elevation Meditation collective are cementing their status. Influences include the likes of Madvillain, Chief Keef, Prodigy, Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang Clan. Don’t miss the chance to see this giant-to-be.
Antwerp’s answer to the Wu-Tang Clan! Roedel is a six-piece collective from Antwerp that perfectly illustrates the expression “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Lazy Louis (who performed just last year at OUT THE FRAME), Mitxelena, Rikky Rozay, Brakka Briesje, tusais and Stef joined forces on their debut album ‘Hondsdolheid’, a record full of 90s beats, jazz samples and raps à la Stikstof. In the meantime they’ve won the Chase Award for best urban act and are already working on their follow-up, ‘247’. “Reminded us of DJ Krush and the heyday of the Mo’Wax label”, said Luminous Dash. Fuck what we think.
Endgame is a London-based producer, DJ, co-founder of Bala Club and the brains behind the label and online radio show Precious Metals. His sound is one in a million: slowed-down and broken samples, biting melodies and spitfire percussion. Endgame blends grime, dancehall, tarraxo, metal and drill to create a distorted but unmistakable sound. “Ice-cold club swagger”, wrote FACT about his debut EP ‘Flesh’, released on the renowned Hyperdub label. In 2020 Endgame launches his own new label and a new LP to boot.
Late last year KRANKk was dubbed ‘most promising act’ at the Red Bull Elektropedia Awards. We concur: this new star in the Belgian hip hop firmament draws on UK garage, grime and bass music to create a completely original, dirty new sound. KRANKk makes dark, aggressive music with rapid raps contributed by guest MCs like Miss Angel, Blu Samu and David Ngyah. Their first release ‘How We Were’ (2018) reminded us of Iglooghost and Aphex Twin; follow-up ‘Dark’ – out 13 March – digs deeper still, showing international promise. Live, KRANKk is a seriously danceable, frenzied and grimey experience!
A philosophical reading group that transforms into an instrumental hip-hop group: in terms of street cred, it may not sound like the best bio. But you could also count Lunch Money Life as one of the most exciting and original hip-hop acts out there today. The band blends experimental jazz, hip hop, electronica and kraut. They have been known to welcome guest rappers and brass players to the stage. So, expect something like the bastard child of J. Dilla and Miles Davis. To be honest, they had us at the track title ‘Unlimited Ice Cream Palace’.
Laima Leyton is the female half of Mixhell, the other half being her darling Igor Cavalera (Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy). With Mixhell she merrily casts techno, acid and rock into the blender, but on her first solo album, ‘Home’, she goes all in on vocal experimentation and electronica. The production was in the safe hands of DEEWEE (Stephen and David Dewaele AKA Soulwax AKA 2ManyDJs). Did you know: to fully appreciate ‘Home’, you are advised to play side A and B simultaneously. We’re just as curious as you as to how Laima will accomplish this live.
“Open your eyes, the beast feeds on exploitation”: the hard underground rave of the Canadian Pelada is socially engaged, urgent and, most of all, brilliant. On their debut, ‘Movimiento Para Cambio’ (PAN, 2019), the duo of Chris Vargas (vocals) and Tobias Rochman (producer) use music as the conduit to share their thoughts on power, identity and the environment. Rochman’s raw mix of rave synths, acid bass lines and breakbeats form the perfect soundtrack. FACT summarises it nicely: “It’s hard not to feel stirred by Pelada’s passion, power and dedication”. Critical club music!
The afterparty for OUT THE FRAME is in the safe hands of two home-grown DJ talents: Brussels’ AliA (Alyah Rivière) and Antwerp’s Bibi Seck. AliA’s eclectic DJ sets vibe to the sound of soul and electronica. Lefto and Mr. Scruff have nothing but praise for this Brussels-sprouted talent. With past performances at Worldwide Festival (Leysin, Switzerland), Clare and ADE (Amsterdam), Listen! and FUSE (Brussels), she’s making a name for herself in a big way in Europe. Bibi Seck earned her stripes in Antwerp’s hip hop scene, playing house grooves, eighties funk, garage and underground club music. With her explosively energetic style, Seck’s sets are gloriously sweaty … our dancefloor is insured, right?
