Jan Lauwers / Needcompany
Thu 21.1120:00 - 22:30NTGent Schouwburg
In ‘The Blind Poet’ Jan Lauwers goes more than a thousand years back in time to talk about identity in multicultural Europe. He draws from the family trees of his performers and writes a new story, based on their nationalities, cultures and languages. Lauwers takes inspiration from the texts of blind Syrian poet Abu al ‘ala al Ma’arri and the Andalusian poet Wallada bint al Mustakfi.
Lauwers came up with the idea during his trip to the Spanish town of Cordoba. A thousand years ago this was the capital of the world. Women were in power, atheism was perfectly normal and the city had an arsenal of 600,000 books in its libraries. History, however, is written by the victor, and this flourishing Moorish city on the European continent is often forgotten. Why is history always so misleading and deceptive?
“Zowel beeldend als literair is de nieuwe productie van Jan Lauwers & Needcompany een streling voor oog en oor”
