Inspirational thinkers invite you to this presentation of new thoughts and practices

Maja Göpel had to cancel her presentation due to illness. Moderator Tine Hens will replace her.

How might we imagine the economy of the future? Could it allow everyone to have a good life without exceeding the limits of our planet’s resources? Which new infrastructures can support sustainable lifestyles while respecting the Global South? And how can we show solidarity with future generations? These are the questions Oikos think tank will be asking for its tenth anniversary congress, a celebration with depth.

Join us in exploring new ideas and practices together with four inspiring thinkers. Our moderator will be Tine Hens (MoMagazine), author of books such as ‘Het klein verzet’ and ‘Het is allemaal de schuld van de Chinezen!’ There will be music by GLiTS, the new project from musicians Peter Vandenberghe (piano) and Bart Maris (trumpet). Newly appointed Vooruit writer-in-residence Hind Eljadid will intervene with some powerful words. Eljadid is an Antwerp-based word artist and writer. She will no doubt stoke the fires of the audience’s conscience with her fierty texts. She is currently working on her literary debut, ‘Kruimeldief’.

Curious to know more? Between 17:00 and 18:30 you can dive deeper into the ideas of Jason Hickel, Maja Göpel or Paul Verhaeghe by joining one of them in conversation. In these preceeding interactive sessions, you’ll have the chance to ask your own questions. These pre-discussions are free of charge, but do make sure you sign up in advance as places are limited. You can register by sending a message to info@oikos.be, mentioning the name of the author you wish to speak with.

SPEAKERS

  • The British progressive economist Jason Hickel is an economic anthropologist and teacher at Goldsmiths, University of London. He’s also the author of ‘The Divide’ and writes regularly for The Guardian and Foreign Policy. In his research Hickel looks at the fields of global inequality, political economy, post-development and ecological economy. In his ethnographic work he focuses on labour migration and politics in South Africa.
  • Paul Verhaeghe is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst and professor at the University of Ghent. In his book ‘Identiteit’, Verhaeghe describes how the neoliberal economy is literally making people ill. In his subsequent publication, ‘Authoriteit’, he explores new, horizontal organisational models, based on collaboration instead of competition, which can also be successfully applied in business.
  • As head economist at Triodos Bank, Kees Vendrik has the task of stimulating dialogue surrounding sustainable fundraising and helping to shift the paradigm of our economy. He is Chairperson of the Sectoral Board for Electricity of the Dutch Climate Agreement. He was previously Vice President of the Netherlands Court of Audit, Chairperson of the Dutch Institute of Fundraising and of the Dutch Foundation for Democracy and Media. He also has political experience in the Netherlands as a member of parliament and as GroenLinks spokesperson for Economy and Finances.

GLiTS

Peter Vandenberghe (piano) and Bart Maris (trumpet) have been playing together a good 27 years in legendary bands like X-Legged Sally and Flat Earth Society. And now they’re blending composition with improvisation as the duo GLiTS (Getting Lost in Tiny Spaces). Their first official album, released in 2017 on El Negocito records, is a gem, full of expansive soundscapes. Keep your ears open for their second LP, coming very soon.
