The ballet ‘Les Sylphides’ by Russian choreographer Mikhail Fokine premiered in 1909. Revolving solely around mood and dance, without any form of narrative, the performance was a groundbreaking piece of ballet. Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger – well known for her powerful physical performances – takes this classic ballet as her starting point.
Sylphides are mythological spirits, which, despite their human-like appearance, do not have a soul. The sylphides from Fokine’s ballet dance light as air on pointe shoes and are completely dressed in white, according to the rules of a ballet blanc. In her reinterpretation Holzinger continues her research around the concept of the female body as a ‘machine for special effects’. On this production she works with a team of professional stuntwomen, dancers and a live camerawoman.

“dans niet zozeer als expressie van absolute vrijheid, maar als een apparaat dat het lichaam verregaand controleert”
