Besides the famous compositions of Bach, ‘The Goldberg Variations’ also refers to the iconic dance solo of Steve Paxton. The American choreographer and godfather of contact improvisation performed an improvisational session of thirteen hours to this classical composition, which was later cut into an impressive 54-minute dance film by Belgian video artist Walter Verdin.
Along with a dancer from Platform K – the Ghent-based dance company for dancers with a disability – and a ballet dancer, choreographer Michiel Vandevelde explores Bach’s compositions and Paxton’s choreography. In the second edition of our focusweek WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST Vandevelde will present this version of ‘The Goldberg Variations’. Their goal: to expand the possibilities of dancing. How open, democratic and accessible is dance nowadays?
