A Western version of the whirling dervish

Belgian visual artist and Vooruit resident Miet Warlop is known for her creative visual style. From blowing up a teddy bear in front of a crowd of kids, to filling up the Vooruit building with bloated plastic pillars, Warlop’s work is often spectacular. This time around, she opts for simpler scenery.

In ‘Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break’ Warlop creates a Western version of the whirling dervish. These mystical dancers spin on the spot for hours in order to achieve a religious trance state. In this performance, three dancers carry out the same exercise. Their movement isn’t about religion, however, it’s about self reflection. The trio only focus on their own movement. Up until the moment when the first drum beats break the silence and a musical interplay unfolds.

“Soms zie je een voorstelling die je eraan herinnert wat je in zoveel andere voorstellingen mist. ‘Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break’ van kunstenaar Miet Warlop is er zo eentje.”
