Tunisian performer and dancer Mohamed Toukabri made a name for himself dancing with artists like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Jan Lauwers. ‘The Upside Down Man (The son of the road)’ is his first self-made performance.
Toukabri moves back and forth, switching between past and present, between two countries and between different forms of art. He explores the concept of an in between space, a philosophical zone he finds himself in. This space is located between his background as a Westernised Muslim from Tunis and the world citizenship that European contemporary dance offers him. Dance, imagery, lyrics and sound converge in an autobiographical performance. This personal tale serves as a means of discussing identity in our current society.
“Zoals Toukabri zijn er geen twee. Sierlijke balletlijnen vloeien over in acrobatisch vloerwerk. Spannend hoe hij breakdance de gewichtloosheid van ballet geeft.”
