In Portuguese ‘CRIA’ has two meanings: young being – human or animal – or creation. In Brazil it is often used to express in which slum someone was born: “I’m CRIA from Complexo.”
‘CRIA’ is a sensual creation by Brazilian choreographer Alice Ripoll. Her main inspirations were the passinho (short step) and dancinha (little dance), two dance styles that originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The performance is a steamy ode to passion. There’s a certain eroticism in Ripoll’s choreography. Relationships create movement and here a new dance is born of the performers’ affections.
