Caution is central to a woman’s experience of life in India. Women are forced to follow strict and rigorous rules in order to be ‘safe’. ‘Be Careful’ is a satire that challenges this notion of safety. Mallika Taneja’s performance is rooted in her own rage and is a statement against the everyday violence towards women in India.
‘Be Careful’ reveals the unfortunate public conflation of the manner in which women dress with the atrocities committed against them. Taneja exposes a macho culture hiding behind ignorant and prudish moral traditions and pinpoints the contradictions at the heart of India’s floundering social progress. Although Mallika specifically addresses the problems in India, her criticism is universal.
