April 1962. French journalist and filmmaker François Truffaut writes a letter to Alfred Hitchcock. Truffaut states that critics often have a shallow image of the work of this ‘master of suspense’. That’s why he suggests to hold a week-long interview with Hitchcock in which the two would discuss cinema. Hitchcock obliges, leading to a session of eight days during which Hitchcocks answers over 500 questions asked by Truffaut. The final result can be read in ‘Le Cinéma selon Alfred Hitchcock’, a book prized by many cinephiles as their personal film bible.
In the year 2000 Belgian film director Guido Henderickx tells actor Damiaan De Schrijver why he considers the book to be “Holy Film Scripture”. The seed was thus planted and, almost twenty years later, De Koning, De Schrijver and Haelvoet of the Belgian company tg STAN now attempt to adapt this iconic tome for theatre.
