Dancer, choreographer and theatre director Faustin Linyekula’s work focuses on post-colonial questions, inspired by a legacy of decades of war, terror and anguish in his homeland of Congo. In ‘Histoire(s) du Théâtre II’ he combines his personal story with the history of contemporary African dance.
Faustin was born in 1974, the year of the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, the legendary boxing match in Kinshasa between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. In the same period African countries were seeking their own identities after gaining their independence. Ironically enough, this often led to cultural statements following European examples, such as the founding of a national ballet. In Congo dancers with different styles and from different regions sought to unite their traditions in one big national ballet. In a sense, colonisation was followed by self-colonisation.
The international press has written the following about Linyekula and his oeuvre: “breathtaking political art” (Los Angeles Times), “a darling of the international festivals” (New York Times) and “quite possibly the most important artist working on the African continent today” (Frieze magazine).
